Tune in for a program featuring her Georgia debut. Fado, which translated means "destiny" or "fate," is a musical genre that can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word "saudade," which has no match in English but could be understood as nostalgia felt while missing someone. The origins of fado are a mixture of African slave rhythms, the traditions of Portuguese sailors, and the influence of Arabic music. Join us for a captivating performance given by Mariza, the genre's biggest star, at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts during the Savannah Music Festival.

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 01:00:00 +0000 Bill Beckett 47065 at http://redriverradio.org Savannah Music Festival: Mariza Live Red River Radio Spotlight: 35th Annual Natchitoches-NSU Louisiana Folk Festival http://redriverradio.org/post/red-river-radio-spotlight-35th-annual-natchitoches-nsu-louisiana-folk-festival
Bill Beckett spoke with Dr. Shane Rasmussen, Director of the Louisiana Folklife Center and an Associate Professor of English at Northwestern State University about the 35th Annual Natchitoches-NSU Louisiana Folk Festival which takes place this Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, in the air-conditioned Prather Coliseum, on the campus of Northwestern State University in historic Natchitoches.
